Hark, now hear the sailors cry / Smell the sea and feel the sky / Let your soul and spirit fly into the mystic

The ocean is the most powerful force on Earth. There is nothing that can stop it, and its vastness knows no bounds. But, no matter how destructive or terrifying it may be, the sea also creates and sustains life, and while it may be dangerous at times, it is a passable obstacle between adventurers and other worlds. Perhaps this is why man has felt it calling out for so many centuries.
The music that accompanies oceanic-related gaming, as you would imagine, can vary quite a bit. However, some things seems fairly consistent. For instance, when close to shore and near calm seas, music is often softer and more upbeat. The farther out from land you get, the bigger the sound. Sweeping strings seem to illustrate the great waves while wind instruments fill your sails. In addition, percussion and brass sections can be used to emphasize the driving sense of adventure and purpose; a mission to be accomplished.
The various selection of instruments and tempos revolve around the the tension of the moment. Are the seas calm? Is there a storm coming? Is there a problem with the ship? Is this a brand new, state of the art ship? Are you paying for a ride or are you a seasoned pirate?
Ah yes, pirates. The ocean, herself, isn’t the only danger for a on the high seas. Hurricanes, scurvy, cabin fever, sea monsters, and of course, pirates, threaten every ship and every sailor. Each journey is a lesson in survival, if you survive.
If you do survive, just imagine the treasure, wine, romance, adventure, and glory waiting for you at every port and on every new island. “Pelagic” – Music For Seafaring is the soundtrack for just that kind of adventure. It’s for the scoundrel and the swashbuckler in all of us.
The ABXY Mage leads a double life of unfathomable hipness, if his expertise in jazz is any indication. Music maker, fandangoist, writer, you can find this hip cat as ABXY Reviews on Twitter and on YouTube.
