Weekend Wizard Inn

The Weekend Wizard Inn: April 5th, 2019

Greetings, fellow travelers! The Weekend Wizard Inn is open for business, so grab a seat and discuss what’s in your gaming quest log for the next few days. Maybe even do so over a piping bowl of ogre blood stew, a roasted giant’s toe, or a cool mug of our freshest snail ale! There’s a great spot over near the fire with some of your fellow mages, and it appears a purple-robed fella with a… creepy mask of sorts… is waving you over!

cba1 Hey, folks! Happy April! Man, I can’t believe 2019 is already 25% over.

Anyway, I’m Trash, a fellow mage, and every Friday afternoon I’ll be here at The Weekend Wizard Inn to help get the conversation started. Join in down in the comment section and let everybody know what’s on your gaming agenda this weekend!

Are you working through your backlog? Playing a hot new release? Maybe forgoing gaming in favor of something people call “real life stuff?”

On deck for me we have…

1: The Caligula Effect Overdose (Switch)

After finishing up Death End Re;Quest and getting my review up earlier in the week, I immediately jumped into the next JRPG review project, being NIS America’s The Caligula Effect Overdose. It’s a “definitive edition” of sorts, based on the original Vita release. What sets it apart from that version is the ability to play as either a male or female character (male was the only option before), you can recruit a ludicrous amount of students as playable party members (which is incredibly pointless since they’re weaker than the primary roster by a significant margin), and you can now see how the other side lives by playing alongside the villainous Ostinato Musicians.

For those of you unfamiliar with Caligula Effect, or its fancy new Overdose edition, it’s a turn-based JRPG with an unnecessarily deep combat system and it’s penned by the writer of the first two Persona titles. I’m a huge fan of Persona and Shin Megami Tensei as a whole, so I went into this one with a certain expectation. Needless to say, it’s failed to meet basically all of them.

I won’t go into detail since I’ll be reviewing it here at The Well-Red Mage in the very near future, but I will say that I’m finding it very difficult to remain interested and most of my time is spent wishing I was playing something else. It centers itself around a complex battle system that can be entirely ignored on the default setting since the game is so easy you can mash the command button to spam a basic attack and essentially kill anything in the game — bosses included. I’ve yet to have a single problem with this tactic and I’m nearly 10 hours into the story. A story which is also pretty thin.

Here’s hoping Caligula Effect takes a turn for the better!

2: Wrestling!

Hopefully, I’m not the only wrestling fan here, because this is Wrestlemania weekend! Regardless of how you may feel about the current WWE product (it’s bad), Wrestlemania weekend has become an event that celebrates professional wrestling as a whole. Plenty of other, better organizations run shows throughout the weekend, from Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling to DDT (Maki Ito vs. Miyu Yamashita — pictured above –was my most anticipated match, which happened yesterday), Tokyo Joshi, and Stardom.

Even if I’ve fallen off the WWE wagon in search of greener pastures, I still renew my WWE Network subscription to watch Wrestlemania. Maybe not all 7+ hours (which is definitely too much wrestling), but I feel weird being a fan of the sports entertainment world and not paying attention.

What about you, folks? Any big plans this weekend, gaming or otherwise?

  1. This’ll be the first time in years that I won’t be able to watch Wrestlemania live due to work the next day (it’s in about 1AM here) which is disappointing. I’ll have to catch up on it over the next couple of nights.

  2. I just got Resident Evil 2 and will be playing it when I get a chance this weekend. But I plan to watch Takeover, Wrestlemania, the Final Four and Championship game which means I’ll be busy the next four nights with that.

  3. Been a broken record for the last few weeks, but I’ll be running my DiRT Rally 2.0 daily challenges and finishing out some monthlies; Destiny 2 grinding a few hours to get my Titan up to the level 700 cap; and getting a good 10 hours minimum put into Division 2.
