Weekend Wizard Inn

The Weekend Wizard Inn: January 11th, 2019

Greetings, fellow travelers! The Weekend Wizard Inn is open for business, so grab a seat and discuss what’s in your gaming quest log for the next few days. Maybe even do so over a piping bowl of ogre blood stew, a roasted giant’s toe, or a cool mug of our freshest snail ale! There’s a great spot over near the fire with some of your fellow mages, and it appears a purple-robed fella with a… creepy mask of sorts… is waving you over!

cba1 Hey, folks! I’m Trash, a fellow mage (and somehow always the first to arrive), and every Friday evening I’ll be here at The Weekend Wizard Inn to help get the conversation started.

On deck for me, we have…

1: The World Ends With You: Final Remix

I made a little progress with this last week, but emphasis on a little. I’ve gotten to the point where I can change the difficulty in order to increase the item drop rates, shop for items and gear, and that’s about where I stopped in order to grind out pin XP and money.

I’m definitely a fan of the art style, the overall style, and the music, but I’m still getting used to playing the game using a single JoyCon as a type of Wiimote cursor in TV mode. It’s not too bad, but my TV is wall mounted so I have to keep my arm elevated to keep the cursor where it belongs. After about 2 hours, my arm is Jell-O.

Maybe I’ll give handheld mode a shot this weekend instead.

That about does it for me, honestly. Because outside of playing games, there’s something else grabbing my attention this week.

I’m a big fan of video game speedruns and this week is AGDQ 2019. For those unfamiliar, it’s an annual week-long speedrun event that goes on 24/7. They raise money for various charities while some of the best speedrunners in the world stream their expertise to viewers on Twitch.

Sometimes you get 4-hour long, game-breaking runs of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, but in the middle of the night you’ll often catch “Awful Games Done Quick” blocks of hilarious garbage like Virtual Hydlide, Urban Yeti, Mega Man DOS, and Mowhawk & Headphone Jack. It’s wonderful.

They always play game music between runs, which is excellent. Every time the theme from NEOGEO’s Street Hoop and the Saturn’s Daytona USA come on I get so giddy.

What about you, folks? Any big gaming plans this weekend?

  1. Got my shiny Platinum in Detroit Become Human so my PS4 is free for another game now. Yay! I thinking of starting God of War but decided to wait for the RE2 Remake (preordered the PS4 version). So I’ll likely spend the weekend with the Witcher 3 on my Xbox One. 🙂

      • I did get the Switch version, but I went digital rather than physical. I heard that the physical starter pack doesn’t come with enough items to do all that well with the campaign. As much as I wanted the Arwing figure, I didn’t want to then have to pay another £40 on extra plastic pieces to get the most out of the game. It’s pretty good though, but it’s very much an Ubisoft game, with tons of menial tasks to take control of areas/planets/etc.

          • I very much get that. I feel they’re mechanically very solid, but they tend to run those mechanics into the ground. I liked Far Cry 5, but I wouldn’t want to go and collect/do everything that was there. I wonder if there are statistics showing how many people do and collect 100% of the content.
