“A New Year, A New Channel!”

“I know not all that may be coming, but be it what it will, I’ll go to it laughing.”
-Herman Melville

It’s the new year! Time for all things to be considered and reconsidered. In the spirit of new horizons and adventure, I’m delighted to announce that we’ve opened our YouTube channel!

Some behind-the-scenes stuff on how I arrived at this threshold: Previously, I was using Patreon as a vehicle for hosting audio reviews, that is, recordings of myself reading aloud our writings at TWRM in my own illustrious and silken voice. These audio reviews were intended as a reward tier incentive for would-be patrons to support our community of writers, however, it’s clear to me that in the early stages of managing a Patreon that friendships and meaningful relationships provide a network of initial support, rendering rewards much less relevant than they would be otherwise.

Again, pouring into relationships is an important part of life, as I’ve written on after the passing of a student and friend.

Streamlining our rewards systems on Patreon led me to thinking of audio reviews in a new light, as a way to reach a wider and more casual audience via YouTube (not to replace the idea for a future podcast called Mage Cast, mind). The consumption of written media is obviously far below that of its audio-visual counterparts, so in the interest of more people being able to access and engage with our material, I’ve decided to create this YouTube channel for read reviews. Hopefully I can read them “well”. 😉

Special thanks to everyone who has supported us and encouraged us along the way! Thank you, readers, contributors, and patrons! The Well-Red Mage continues to grow as a publication and a community because of you, and I will do my best to ensure it lives up to your support!

I’m super excited for the future and thrilled to see what more awaits as we continue to think about how to inspire a better world for games writing and for the gaming community.

In your service,
-The Well-Red Mage

  1. Good luck with the new YouTube channel. I have actually considered creating a YouTube channel for my reviews, except I was thinking of producing videos of the game being played whilst reviewing it. I thought this would help demonstrate the parts of the game I was describing and allow me to focus the viewer’s attention on to specific areas (for example, while playing Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, I would be able to easily compare the different dungeons because they would be shown in the video).
What visuals would you use while reading the reviews?

  2. I look forward to video episodes! I don’t have a Google account (ugh) but I do watch a fair number of personalities on YouTube, and I’ll be adding this one to the list. In the words of Mark Bussler “WOOOOOO! EDF!” (EDF is an acronym for Earth Defense Force. I feel like I need to explain that for some reason.) Good luck!

    • Alright! Awesome! Thanks so much, sincerely, for all the support! You’re a major component in making TWRM the place that it is for writers and gamers to come together! I hope that this YT channel can repay your support with quality content.

    • BUHROTHAAAAAAA! Thank you very much for sharing in the excitement! 😀
I spent most of yesterday re-uploading the same video and taking it down, as I kept messing up each time (I blame Windows Movie Maker for that). I have since migrated to Adobe Premiere Pro and it’s going much more smoothly. I still have a LOT to learn but I’d be happy to talk launching with you when you get ready to put up your own channel. Hit me up!

  3. Congratulations! Starting off the new year right and I love it. One of my goals this year is to start the YouTube channel for gaming. Tentatively, we are launching on January 8th, fingers crossed lol. Im happy that you are starting things off right and we at GamersUnitedGG are here to support! Happy New Year!

  4. This is what I started doing with some of my pieces. Then I got a cold that stuck around for about three months so I didn’t feel like recording anything. Going to start doing it again shortly though, it’s a lot of fun!
